Excerpt

To my surprise, I spotted a large bouquet of roses and a teddy bear propped at my mirror. A sweet gesture, but typically, security kept those in a separate room until they could be checked, unless they came from someone with access. But no one who’d give a teddy bear as a gift popped into my head. I was about to check for a card when I heard someone call my name loudly enough to rise above all the background chatter.

“Miss Penny! Miss Penny!”

My brow rose sharply as I spotted the brown-haired snake waving her arm madly as she made her way in my direction. Heads started to turn. “I got that special drink you asked for!”

Was she mad? No drinks were allowed in the dressing area, not when they could be spilled and ruin a designer’s masterpiece. And what was all that babbling about my having asked for it?

Before I could attempt to say anything, Tonya tripped, and the cup’s contents sprayed all over me.  Worse, the dark liquid splashed all over Loni’s gown.

“Oh my goodness! I’m so sorry!”

The fake horror on her face and in her voice flipped a hidden switch in my head. I turned into a spewing volcano, wanting nothing but to turn the idiot into ash. “You anorexic twat! Look at what you’ve done!” The cold frappe soaked through the dress, egging my anger on. “You’re a sorry excuse of a wannabe model! How dare you stain one of Loni’s gowns? Could you be any more useless?”

Crocodile tears welled up in Tonya’s eyes. “I said I was sorry!” Her whiny, grating voice rose in pitch and volume. “It’s not like I meant to. I was only doing what you forced me to do! Even after I reminded you that we aren’t allowed drinks back here!”

My hands curled into claws. “I don’t have time for your delusional nonsense!” I shoved her away from me before I was tempted to sink my nails into her flesh and watch her bleed. How could she have done this to Loni?

Tonya cried out and fell dramatically to the floor as if I’d punched rather than pushed her. “Why, Miss Penny? Why? I only wanted us to be friends!”
