The Price of Mercy – Reviews

The story of Jarrin is exciting and full of suspense. The characters are entertaining and multi-facetted, often not what they appear. The fantasy world holds many elements of the fairy-tale while retaining a clear identity all its own.
Why youâll like it: Absorbing and fast paced plot. Magic, fantasy and a little romance.
Why you wonât: The main characters are faultlessly fair and selfless. It could deter those of a more cynical persuasion.

The Price of Mercy was a well written book with loyalty, kindness, and giving playing key roles in this marvelous tale of two people brought together by sacrifice and betrayal. It was an easy read, but seemed to be almost too straight forward with nothing for the reader to figure out making it seem a little predictable. However, I enjoyed it and will definitely recommend it to others.

Jarrin was forced to become a gigolo to a lusty baroness. When the baroness finds a new lover she lets Jarrin go but gives him some money and an invitation to the imperial ball. He goes in search of a new patroness. In the garden he meets a woman he thinks will take him in but in the end he leaves her with only a stolen kiss. The next day he is being sought after for treason, the crime, he deflowered the emperorâs daughter. His punishment is to live life as one of the twelve, a monster, in the service of the emperor.
This book was such a surprise. I was fully prepared to hate the princess, the emperor, the twelve, and everybody else except Jarrin, and instead found myself liking all of them. Well, except the bad guy. I liked the fact that Jarrin does not stay in monster form for the whole book. I loved taking the journey with Jarrin as he comes to understand why he was accused and see how he comes to terms with what he is. I love the ending and hope that this is the first of many in a series with these characters. I canât say enough good things about this book.

The Price of Mercy was an easy read and really enjoyable.
Filled with romantic tension from the start of the book and then of course magic and even some action. Iâd say it has a romantic fairytale feel to it.
This book could be for more than one type of reader and I would say it was definitely worth reading.

At first, I was skeptical about this novel, but after the first couple of chapters, I was hooked. I thought it was beautifully written and each character had a distinct voice. The transformation of the âtwelveâ was a very creative twist on shapeshifting(the reptilian form), magic, and bodyguards. The concept of the âBlightâ was also very interesting, but I would have personally liked more information on the incident. Of course, this is not something that hindered the novel or the plot. I also enjoyed the romance between Jarrin and Yolondra, which was pleasantly sprinkled throughout the novel but didnât overpower the story. Overall this was an excellent novel that I would read again and again.

Gloria Oliverâs THE PRICE OF MERCY is an entertaining read and, when the action really picked up, I didnât want to put it down. Itâs a light fantasy with a touch of romance so it has two audiences who will approve and I especially recommend this to fans of Beauty and the Beast, who will, I think, enjoy a rather different take on it. It provided some amusement that she has a group referred to as THE TWELVE, which is very different from the group in my book with that title. A good read.
